We've spent some time talking about why cats use litter, but have you ever wondered what your best option is for litter? There are so many different kinds: different materials, different claims, different benefits.
At Smalls, we've developed our litter in partnership with Dr. Mikel Delgado, our resident cat expert and leading animal behaviorist. Here are some things that you need to know when it comes to picking your cat's litter, so it's perfect for their needs, not just yours.
Texture
All of our cats are unique, but their desire to bury their business is pretty universal. Since cats have sensitive paws, the texture of the litter is extremely important.
Cats prefer finer, sand-like particles, as opposed to pellets or larger crystals. This is because finer particles are easier to dig and feel more comfortable to them.
Smalls' Millet and Silica litter are both fine enough to be comfortable underfoot, while also weighted enough to resist tracking.
Scent
Cats have from 2 to 40 times as many smell-receptor cells in their noses as humans. Scents that might seem light and pleasant to you can be overwhelmingly strong to them.
Cats prefer their litter to smell like nothing at all.
Not surprisingly, the science tells us cats prefer unscented litter. That doesn’t just mean added scents and scented deodorizers, it also applies to scents that might occur naturally in certain litters, such as pine.
Smalls' litter is highly absorbent and traps odors, so there's no need to mask any scents.
